When You Set Up an LLC, Don’t Forget the Domain Name
by: Blair Woods
When you set up an LLC, don’t forget to secure a domain name. Even if you are not ready to expand your business to the web right away, securing a domain name is still a smart move. Millions of domain names are taken already it is wise to plan ahead. The rules for choosing a domain name are very similar to those used when you choose a name for your business.
- Pick a name that is memorable
- Choose a name that is easy to spell and pronounce
- Your business name should suggest the products and services your business provides
- Confirm the domain name is available
When you open an LLC attempt to secure a domain name that incorporates part of your business name. Repeat customers will be able to find your website with ease. But, what about first time customers that are searching for a specific product or service? Secure a second domain name that will also land on your site. For example, you set up an LLC and name the business Blooms By Design. You will want to secure the domain name bloomsbydesign.com but, you should also try to secure a name like flowers.com for the same site. Another good strategy is to snap up all potential spellings of your business name. When your customer types in bloombydesign.com instead of bloomsbydesign.com they can still end up on your site.
You can quickly find out if your business name is available as a domain name by using the search engine at http://www.networksolutions.com/. After you have picked a domain that is available register it on-line through an approved domain name registry. The cost to register is $35 for the 1st year and $30 each additional year. When you register your domain don’t forget to register the alternate domain names you created.
What if you set up an LLC, and picked the perfect domain name just to find out it’s already taken? Don’t panic, you have some options.
When you open an LLC, a .com domain name is not the only option. Your domain name may still be available if you are willing to use another suffix such as .org, .net, .biz, or .info. You can also play with slight variations of your business name. If bloomsbydesign.com is not available, blooms-by-design.com may be. A word of caution, make sure you consider trademarks carefully if you go with a slightly different name or use an alternate suffix when .com is unavailable.
Purchasing your domain name is another option if your domain name is already taken. If the name you want is reserved but not being used, you may be able to buy it. Buying a domain name can be done by directly contacting the owner, using an auction website or through a domain name broker.
When you set up an LLC, think big even though the business may start out small. Securing a domain name today is planning a better tomorrow for your business.
