The term “doing business as”, abbreviated as DBA or d/b/a, is a legal term referring to a business that is not using the legal name of it's owner or owners to conduct business. Since the business in using a name that has been created, some states will refer to this as a fictitious business name or assumed business name.
Each state applies it's own set of rules to the application for a fictitious business name. In fact, some even require extra steps before recognizing the new business name, such as having the fictitious name published in local newspapers for a set period of time to inform the public of the owner's intent to operate under an assumed name.
